Get playing and learning math through fun! Whenever my son struggles with learning a new math concept, we switch focus to playing a board game. These board games all follow the same idea and rules, but include different boards and cards for each of the math concepts.
The addition board game and the subtraction game each have fewer spaces on the board, making for a quicker and easier game for younger children, whereas the multiplication and division game boards are slightly longer. These math games each have a colored game board with a simple start and finish and the beginning and end of the path.
Play this as a cooperative game where all players reach the end before the pile of cards runs out, or make it a race to see who can get to the end first for the competitive children. Continue with manipulatives. Even older kids who are starting to learn multiplication and division need to explore basic operations using small pieces before committing facts to memory.
Some of my favorite manipulatives are teddy bear counters , 2-color counters , and unifix cubes. Small budget? Use pennies! Reinforce the concept in a variety of ways. In addition to manipulatives, try number lines, ten frames, and more. Pinterest is your friend.

Find the difference between two numbers by subtracting the smaller number from the larger number. First one to the end wins! Choose any numbers to fill the bottom row of the pyramid. Add the numbers next to one another and write it in the box above. Keep going until your reach the top! A game of strategy and skill. Know your times tables and be the first to place 4 counters in a row.
Place Value Games. Move around the outer squares finding matching numbers in the centre. The first player to place 4 counters in a row wins! Race to place down 8 counters to be the winner. Match the place value of the digits in your number to numbers in the centre squares. Roll the dice to move around the board. When you land on a space, follow the directions given by adding or subtracting the time on your clock.
The first player to reach the time of pm is the winner!
